The human body can respond to antigen in many different ways. These fall into two major categories.
In the first, antibody-mediated immunity, antibodies dissolved in blood, lymph, and other body fluids
bind the antigen and trigger a response to it. (This form of immunity is also called humoral immunity.)
The second, cell-mediated immunity is expressed by T-lymphocytes through direct cytotoxicity and
the release of lymphokines. The functions of cell-mediated immunity include the destruction of fungi
and tumor cells and the elimination of viral infections. T cells (lymphocytes) bind to the surface of
other cells that display the antigen and trigger a response. The response may involve other
lymphocytes and any of the other white blood cells (leukocytes). Because of their capability of killing
both without prior sensitization and without major histo-compatibility requirements, natural killer
(NK) cells represent an immune surveillance mechanism independent of classic T cell-mediated
immunity. Compromised or absent natural immunity is associated with acute and chronic viral
infections such as AIDS, chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), psychiatric
depression, and various immunodeficiency syndromes. |

Cellular immune status |

|
blood |
| DEFINITIONS |
|
This is the distribution of lymphatic subpopulations in the peripheral blood of patients. The
subpopualtions are important to distinguish between suppressor cells and cytotoxic cells, NK cells,
CD4+ helper cells and count the absolute and relative distribution. The patient can than be monitored
after starting with immune therapy. |

Natural killer cell function
(Cytotoxic activity adverse virus
infected cells and tumor cells ) |

| DEFINITIONS |
|
Natural killer cells are effector lymphocytes of the innate immune system that control several types of
tumors and microbial infections by limiting their spread and subsequent tissue damage. NK cells are
also regulatory cells engaged in reciprocal interactions with dendritic cells, macrophages, T cells and
endothelial cells. NK cells can exacerbate or limit immune responses. |

Targeted immune modulators form a relatively new class of herbal drugs for a variety of diseases and
symptoms, disorders associated with low NK cell activity and with chronic inflammation and an
inappropriate immune response. The diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, CFS,
Fibromyalgy, and inflammatory bowel disease. The test substances are compared with the basic NK
cell function and the natural Il-2 stimulation. In order of effectiveness, they can be used as treatment
options. |

TH1-TH2 Interleukin balance
(Examination of the immune
balance condition by interleukin
analysis of immune modulators,
including standard panel:
selenium, vitamin C, thymus,
mistletoe, ASS) |
| SAMPLE |
|
blood |
| DEFINITIONS |
|
Th1 and Th2 helper cells direct different immune response pathways. Th1 cells drive the type1
pathway (cellular immunity) to fight viruses and other intracellular pathogens, eliminate cancerous
cells, and stimulate delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) skin reactions. Th2 cells drive the type 2
pathway (humoral immunity) and up-regulate antibody production to fight extracellular organisms;
type 2 dominance is credited with tolerance of xenografts and of the fetus during pregnancy. Overactivation
of either pattern can cause disease, and either pathway can down-regulate the other. |
